Primary Literature, keys to Andrena species

 

Having ascertained the Andrena subgenus, the next step would be to consult the species keys in the publications of W.E. LaBerge, and various collaborators. These are challenging for the non-specialist, with technical language and references to material most users will not have at hand. Particularly frustrating is the lack of any kind of illustration that might explain ambiguous characters. But at present (to my knowledge), these are the definitive resources.

 

Oh, and: most of these are behind paywalls, in many cases set to become freely available after 2050. In the meantime, the taxa will likely be revised by others to incorporate more accurate phylogeny, and hopefully more accessible ID tools. The best of which might be the era of cheap and rapid barcoding.
